According to study, your weight may increase if you sleep with 'lights on'

(AFP) Do you think is there any connection between Sleeping with light on and weight gain? But the science shows there is a link.

According to the study carried out by researcher at the Ohio State University, Too much light at night appears to lead to weight gain, based on studies of mice .

The researchers found that mice exposed to a dim light at night over eight weeks had a weight gain that was about 50 per cent more than other mice that lived in a standard light-dark cycle.

“Although there were no differences in activity levels or daily consumption of food, the mice that lived with light at night were getting fatter than the others,” said Ms Laura Fonken, the lead author of the study and a researcher at the Ohio State University.

New Device to freeze your Toned Body.

Scientists at Zeltiq in California have developed a device that freezes body flab to remove extra content from your body.

Known as CoolSculpting device, it is being promoted as a painless alternative to liposuction, features a gel patch that clamps on to flabby parts and freezes fat cells.

It works by killing the fat cells at sub-zero temperatures , which are re-absorbed and flushed away by the body over the next few months, leaving the patient trimmer.

They realised that although fat freezes at a lower temperature than other types of tissue, skin and muscles can survive sub-zero temperatures without suffering lasting damage.

Obesity is 'determined by brain'

(PTI)An international study claims to have finally found the reason as to why some people who eat a high-fat diet remain slim, while others pile on the weight — obesity is determined by brain.

The study, led by Monash University in Australia, found that a high-fat diet causes brain cells to become insulated from the body preventing vital signals, which tell the body to stop eating and burn energy, from reaching the brain efficiently.

Prof. Michael Cowley, who led the research, said there were two clear outcomes from the findings.

"We discovered that a high-fat diet caused brain cells to become insulated from the body, rendering the cells unable to detect signals of fullness to stop eating. Secondly, the insulation also created a further complication in that the body was unable to detect signals to increase energy use and burn off calories," he said.

Less sleep raises obesity risk in kids: study

(Reuters) Children aged four and under who get less than 10 hours of sleep a night are nearly twice as likely to be overweight or obese five years later, according to a US study.

Researchers from the University of California and University of Washington in Seattle looked at the relationship between sleep and weight in 1,930 children aged 0 to 13 years old who took part in a survey in 1997 and again five years later in 2002.

For children who were four years old or younger at the time of the first survey, sleeping for less than 10 hours a night was associated with nearly a twofold increased risk of being overweight or obese at the second survey.

For older children, sleep time at the first survey was not associated with weight status at the second survey but current short sleep time was associated with increased odds of a shift from normal weight to overweight status or from overweight or obese status at follow up. Dr Janice F Bell from the University of Washington said this study suggested that early childhood could be a "critical window" when nighttime sleep helps determine a child's future weight status.

New wonder drug to help lose weight.

(Deccan Chronicle)
The claim
A compound called Lorcaserin helps overweight people lose about five per cent of their body weight with few side effects.

The facts
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, while the weight reduction owing to Lorcaserin is modest, the drug could have fewer side effects than others.

The drug acts on a specific subset of receptors for the chemical messenger serotonin. These receptors play a role in satiety, the feeling of fullness. “This is the first tailor-made molecule to target receptors involved in producing satiety and reducing caloric intake,” said Arne Astrup, a physician at the University of Copenhagen.
Several weight-loss drugs have been pulled from the market or abandoned in late-stage development because of dangerous side effects. Lorcaserin, however, was designed to target a subset of serotonin receptors called 5-HTC2, and as it targets brain receptors specifically, Lorcaserin has very few side effects.

Trick the Brain to shed weight.

Being a little smart may help you lose weight! The brain can be tricked into shedding weight by eating high satiety, low-calorie foods like apples, bananas and grapes.

For instance, eating an apple before your meal can make you feel more satisfied from your food, says a Daily Mail report.

Apples are about 25 per cent air and, as they're digested, they produce the hormone GLP-1, which sends satiety signals to the brain.
